Emergency Dentistry – Potomac Falls, VA

Quick and Compassionate Care

A dental emergency can be both painful and frightening. Fortunately, expert help is not far away. Give us a call as soon as possible and describe the situation. We will give you tips on at-home care and make room in our schedule to see you as soon as possible — probably on the same day that you call. After Dr. Bryce, your emergency dentist, evaluates the damage to your oral health, he will provide prompt, compassionate, and comfortable treatment to get your smile’s well-being back on track.

How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies

As mentioned above, one of the first things you should do during a dental emergency is call our office. Whether your problem is the result of a longstanding dental issue that suddenly causes pain or it is due to trauma, we are ready to leap into action to help! Before you get here for your appointment, however, there may be some steps you can take to reduce your pain and minimize the damage to your oral health.

Toothache

Over the counter pain relievers can help to take the edge off of your discomfort. Avoid chewing with the tooth. Depending on the cause of the toothache, Dr. Bryce may recommend root canal therapy as the best treatment.

Chipped/Broken Tooth

Placing a piece of gum or dental wax on the tooth can protect the soft tissues in your mouth from its jagged edges. Collect any large pieces of the tooth that broke off and bring them to your appointment. Depending on the extent of the damage, Dr. Bryce might be able to repair the tooth. However, extraction is also a possibility.

Knocked-Out Tooth

Touching the tooth only by its top part, pick it up and rinse off any debris. Attempt to place it back in its socket. If that is not possible, store it in a glass of milk or water until you arrive at our office for your appointment. If you get here within an hour or two of your tooth getting knocked out, Dr. Bryce may be able to splint the tooth back into place.

Lost Filling/Crown

Do not chew with the vulnerable tooth. You might be able to temporarily reattach a lost crown with a dab of denture adhesive. Our team may be able to permanently reattach your restoration, but it is also possible that you will need a new restoration altogether.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

You can drastically reduce your risk of facing a dental emergency if you take some simple precautions:

  • Thoroughly brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss once a day
  • Always wear a mouthguard when you play sports
  • Eat a balanced, low-sugar diet
  • Do not use your teeth as a tool to trim your fingernails or open packages
  • Visit a dentist for regular preventive care at least twice a year
  • Book a dental appointment at the first sign of an oral health problem; do not wait until the pain becomes severe
